Efficient drainage concept for open spaces.
Remodeling Holstenbrücke – Kleiner Kiel Canal

With this new area, Kiel has gained an attractive city-centre space that welcomes visitors to stay. Based on the development goals, such as the creation of public space in which to stroll and while away the hours, the enhancement of the city image and the improvement of the retail location, plans were also drawn up to develop a new water route between Kleiner Kiel and Bootshafen (Boat harbour). The Kleiner Kiel Canal that was created as a result has been a major contributor to the attractiveness of the area.

Where previously there was a multi-lane road that left hardly any space for pedestrians, large areas have been repurposed as a recreation and relaxation space. This space includes two ponds that reflect the maritime flair of the city. Furthermore, the promenade allows the restaurants and cafes in this area to offer outside seating along the Fleet. The previous traffic areas for trams, buses, cyclists and pedestrians have been restructured to create a large square area in which private car traffic cannot enter.
